Radio 1

1) How popular is BBC Radio 1? Find average listening figures for the station. How has the BBC Radio 1 audience declined over recent years? Why might this have happened?

BBC Radio 1 is a British radio station operated by the British Broadcasting Corporation which also broadcasts internationally, specialising in modern and current popular music and chart hits throughout the day. Radio 1 provides alternative genres after 7:00 pm, including electronic dance, hip hop, rock, indie or interviews.  It's estimated that Radio 1 has an estimate of 10.26 million listeners and it can also be digitally distributed in many other countries. 

2) Who is the target audience for BBC Radio 1?

It is aimed primarily at the 15–29 age group, although the average age of the UK audience in 2008 was 33. 

3) How does Plan B promote Ill Manors in this interview?

Plan B promotes 'Ill Manors as a film which shows what happens with the youth growing up in East London. He also stated that if this film was successful he would go on to produce more films. He describes his role in 'Ill Manors' in terms of the production process and this helps to enhance his star image. Plan B plays many parts in terms of the production such as directing, filming and editing. His involvement with the film is likely to attract many of his fans.

4) What representation of Plan B can we find in this interview?
Plan B describes how he's been sleeping off a sofa in his studio because of the fact that he is putting in hard effort and time to edit 'Ill Manors'. Also, Plan B is described to have changed his look in terms of appearance and occupation (experiencing more with film than music at this point).

Ill manors: Official website



  1. How does the Ill Manors official website promote the film? The website gives a visual representation of what the film is all about, as the whole website has this wrecked look, and is dark which portrays what the characters are like, this is what would attract the audience, the website follows through this look wherever you click, so the atmosphere is the same. They promote the film by having the trailer to view, stills, videos and reactions and reviews of what viewers think of the movie.
  2. What examples can you find of the Ill Manors brand on the website homepage? The title 'ill manors' on the website is the same as it is shown in the film, posters etc. This is very large on the top left of the screen and this is how the brand is shown on the website. 
  3. What links does the website offer? The website offers links to view the trailer, which is essential as audience would want to view this. They also have links to  the synopsis which explains the background behind the storyline. They also have a link to the director 'Ben drew' which has some background information about him and how he feels about his first directed movie. There are also stills of the film and characters. There is a link to the Album which has the full soundtrack of the movie. There is also a link to videos showing behind the scenes footage so the audience gets an insight to the background. There is a 'buy now' link where you can purchase the dvd or blueray. The final link is to the reactions and reviews of the film.

What examples of synergy can you find between the website homepage and the print/broadcast platforms? The font of the title is the same on the website and posters/DVD packaging, a bold and basic font to uplift the fact the film is low-budget and urban, the title is in white to connote an element of seriousness which reflects the depth of the problems the actors have to face in the film. In addition, the same actors are used especially Riz Ahmed who heavily devises the plot and to make the audience aware and to remind them that he is the prominent figure in the film.

Twitter allows the brand to be promoted to all those who followed. When fans retweet the brand's tweets, more people will be informed about Ill Manors which is very helpful for promotions.

Pictures of people buying the DVD and people waiting in places such as HMV to meet the actors and director are used in twitter to help promote the film as it shows the rising popularity of the film which would further attract more fans.

The Tag London campaign helps target the right audience for the film as it shows the opinions projected in iconic places in London which will surely attract the attention of the right target audience as it is shocking to see graffiti on these iconic places.

Similarly to Facebook, all activities with relevance to Ill Manors was posted on the page but in addition to this, fans reactions and opinions are held with greater importance on the twitter page in comparison to the facebook page.

YouTube - planbuk channel
planbuk uploads many relevant clips to promote Ill Manors, especially by uploading behind the scenes footage which would not be shown in the cinema.

During the TEDx talk, Plan B displayed his music video from his you tube channel. Both the TEDX talk and the music video promotes the film as it shows how young people can go off the rails if they arent helped by people in the position to help them.



Ill manors E-media: Tag London campaign

  • Summarise the Ill Manors Tag London campaign in 100 of your own words.
The campaign is a designed to gather social media technology and started off by tweet-to-unlock release, Fans were made to tweet the hashtag to receive is a link to a SoundCloud set that hosted tracks from the album before it was fully released. The #illmanorsalbum hashtag also led to an increase in mentions for Plan B's official accountFans were prompted to tweet a newly created @TagLondon account with the hashtag #ILLMANORS and say how they feel about the current state of Britain. The campaign had over 5,000 entries in the space of five days and nearly 300 selected tweets were tagged by graffiti artists and then projected around iconic London sites. The peak of the #ILLMANORS hashtag was on release day, with over 1.3k tweets on that day compared to the previous week’s daily average of 220 tweets per day. The locations and images of these messages were then broadcast via the micro-site.

Print platform: Branding


1)What are the key conventions that help you identify the print text (e.g. title, central image, review quotes etc.)?
The key conventions in this poster advert of ill manors is the central image which is large and shows one of the main protagonists along with a view of buildings and trees which are used to compose the title 'ill manors' as the 'ill' is perhaps shown as building and the 'manors' is shown on the road, which looks similar to a zebra crossing. All these things help you identify the print text which is a poster of the film.

2)What design features help identify the Ill Manors brand?
  The colour scheme in this poster is yellow, black and has parts of grey shown and this has a contrast of bright and dull, which could identify positives and negatives in the film. The font of the title is in large block capitals which makes it bold and stand out from the poster, the two colours used for the title are white and yellow which are two bright colours and this makes them stand out from the rest of the poster. The overall design of the poster looks good. 

3)What examples of synergy can you find with the broadcast platform or other print examples?
The poster looks as if it has been photographed in the suburban areas of London and Plan B decided to film in East London where he originally grew up to show the experiences he faced when growing up. Also, he wanted to create a low-budget film to help promote the grim reality the youth live up to in the suburban areas of London.

What are the key conventions that help you identify the print text (e.g. title, central image, review quotes etc.)The key conventions in this poster advert of ill manors is the central image which is of many of the main characters in a line leaning forward and shows one the main protagonist walking in the middle and he looks larger than the other characters,so he seems more superior than them.
  2. What design features help identify the Ill Manors brand? The colour scheme of this poster is red, white and black, and text is all white which makes it stand out from the rest of the blog. This has a contrast of bright and dull, which could identify positives and negatives in the film. The font of the title is in large block capitals which makes it bold and stand out from the poster.

The key conventions to help identify that this is the DVD cover are the review quotes, which show how many stars the film deserves from different newspaper and one or two words they would use to describe the movie e.g 'utterly gripping'.
  2. What design features help identify the Ill Manors brand? The font design helps identify the Ill Manors brand. The main character at the front helps the audience to recognize the film. The gun at the front portrays violence besides crime which fits into Ill Manors brand and helps people to identify it. Also underneath the title "Ill Manors" it states that it is a "Ben Drew Film" indicating the Ill Manors brand. Another thing is the design of the image in the background of the estate buildings hurdling in gives the idea of the Ill Manors theme of estates being intimidating.
  3. What examples of synergy can you find with the broadcast platform or other print examples? There is synergy between other print platforms such as the DVD cover and the music packaging which show the same title in the way it it shown here.

Jonathan Ross show: Television




1) What is the history of the Jonathan Ross show? What channels has it appeared on? Why has Jonathan Ross been a controversial media figure in the past?
The Jonathan Ross Show is a British talk show presented by Jonathan Ross. It was first broadcast on ITV on 3 September 2011 and airs on Saturday evenings following the conclusion of Ross' BBC One chat show, Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, in July 2010.

2) Identify the target audience for this interview (demographics/psychographics) and say why.
There are many target audiences. As the Jonathan Ross show attracts middle aged middle class and working class people. They would watch this. If they knew Plan B was appearing on the show then maybe teenagers and underclass people would watch the show too. The show is there to open people but only a few people from certain classes watch this show.

3) What is the audience appeal for a programme like the Jonathan Ross show?
The audience appeal for this show is that Jonathan Ross is a well-known person. He is there to  be funny and have a laugh but also get along with the people that come on his show. The show is quite friendly and has a lot of audience.

4) How is Plan B (the brand) represented in this text?
Plan B is represented in many ways. He seen as a rapper and a director in some people eyes and because of his rap career he seen in a bad light sometimes because of the music he raps about. He raps about things that bother him and tries to tell a story so that everyone can hear and understand it. The only people that understand are teenagers.
