    MEST1 Section B: A Field In England

    Summary:
    A field in England is a low budget, black and white,art house film it is about a group of deserters flee from battle through an overgrown field. Captured by an alchemist, the men are forced to help him search to find a hidden treasure that he believes is buried in the field. The film tries to break the Hollywood model of distribution by becoming the first film in the UK to launch simultaneously across all platforms. 

    How was A Field In England’s release different to typical film releases?
    The release is different to the typical releases as it was simultaneously distributed across many platforms on the same day, this would attract more people as they have many places to view the film, so some viewers may go to the cinema to watch this while others would rather sit at home and watch it on DVD. 
    What are the advantages to releasing the film across all platforms on the same day?
    Everyone will have a different ways of accessing the film, either by buying it on DVD, streaming it online, or going to a cinema or theatre. It creates excitement on that day as everyone would want to view it and it reduces piracy and any other illegal ways of watching the film. 
    What are the disadvantages to this approach?
    The drawback is that once the film is released there will be excitement just on that one day and there will be no more left such as people watching it a few months later till the DVD's release of streaming it online. 
    What target audience would A Field In England be aimed at? Demographics and Psychographics.
    For psychographics the main category this film would appeal to is explorers because they set out to seek discovery and love finding out new things. They tend to have a lot of energy, individualized and experienced. The first kinds of people to try out new brands and is usually the younger demographic students such as those in college or uni. This may also appeal to succeeders who seek control and have strong goals. There would be an audience aged 25-30 and above with ABC1 demographic. 
    Do you think all films in future will be released across all platforms simultaneously in future?
    This is possible as social media sites, mostly facebook and Twitter, help contribute to the promotion side of the film helping to create excitement  for an earlier release of the film because people may want to view the film as the same time as others, even if they have different ways of doing this such as downloading it online, buying the DVD or actually going to the cinema. This helps reduce the risk of piracy.

    Q1)  What is the BBC hoping to achieve by including behind the scenes footage?
    The BBC was hoping to achieve a positive brand image, so that the BBC has a better reputation. The BBC are presented as a good and friendly brand. There are many close-ups of the penguins to illustrate how an emotional connection is formed with the audience because there are fascinated, this amuses the viewer 

    Q2) How are editing and sound used in the sequence to structure the narrative
    There is an initial equilibrium when David Attenborough says "whatever the crew tries" there are shots of difficulties such as the crew taking risks by diving into freezing cold water to get the perfect shot for their show. Then there is a disequilibrium with eerie music and David Attenborough says "only a small hole of lifeline to the surface". Then the climax where the penguins come out of the water and there is diagetic movement and sounds with magical music and a voice over of David Attenborough saying "this is Antarctica at its most enchanting". The penguins are all shown in slow motion which shows how dramatic they are trying to make the scene look.

    Q3) How is the crew represented in the sequence?
    The crew is represented as heroic as they are taking risks by working against all odds and "scuba diving in the coldest waters of the planet" which is dangerous but they are willing to do anything to be seen as a dedicated crew. 

    Q4) Does the programme 'inform, educate and entertain' its audience?
    The programme educated the audience with the use of technology, and the ability to film in such extreme environments. The programme is used as a good entertainment through the humorous element. The dialogue used from the voice over is not typical for such a programme and it uses more sarcasm which entertains the viewers as they are trying to make it fun and more enjoyable for them to watch, mostly when the voice over of David Attenborough says "spectacular belly flop" creating a humorous atmosphere for the audience.

    Institution research

    Distribution 
    1) The guide shows that films can be conceived in a variety of ways, these include true life stories, a unique moment of inspiration, an historical figure, and event or a moment in time. The film is about sharing experiences and letting the audience enjoy it, whatever the genre. Also films have the power to inspire and show different emotions to express what the characters are thinking, yet they can't find words for the emotions. The cinema screen allows large audiences to see these films, which is the best opportunity. It was said by Sir Alan Parker that "As a filmmaker, I know only too well that films do not exist for their own sakes... they only exist when 
    they are being experienced by an audience."

    2) Movies have the power of enriching every aspect of our lives, which amuses us as an
     audience, they influence the music we play the fashion the games  we enjoy. Films have an impact both socially and commercially, this shows their true connection with an audience. It is in the hands of the distributors to deliver the largest audience possible for every film. This is quite hard as in this day and age there is so many other options to be entertained, whether this is online or on television. Digital has ruined the ways in which films are released, promoted and consumed, and it is reshaping the kind of entertainment centre that a modern cinema can be.

    3) Distribution is really the highly competitive business when launching films. The distributors challenge is to bring each film to the market by  identifying its audience, considering why they'd go and see it ,estimating the revenue potential across all the formats of its release, persuading exhibitors (cinema operators) to play the film, developing plans and partnerships to build awareness of and interest in the film, aiming to convert as much interest as possible into cinema visits. The film business is product driven, as the films are the reason to someone buying a ticket. 

    4) As is the case in most countries, the UK has six major distributors (directly affiliated to the Hollywood studios) and many independent (unaffiliated) distributors who tend to handle films made outside the major studios.

    3. How did the Ill Manors budget compare to a Hollywood blockbuster such as Skyfall? The sky fall budget (150-200 million) has a huge difference with the budget of ill manors, as skyfall is a film of a franchise known world wide and has sequences in many different countries and locations compared to ill mannors

    Distributor: Revolver Entertainment

    1. When was Revolver Entertainment created? Revolver entertainment was created in 1967
    2. Revolver Entertainment enjoyed a lot of success with the UK urban drama genre. Find three Revolver films that fit that genre, embed the trailers from YouTube and write about why they were successful. 

    This film sket is an urban drama genre as it is similar to ill manors, due to the events that would occur in both movies, this film is successful as it was popular among teenagers around the UK,.  


    This film is called The imposter and was successful as it was nominated for a grand jury world documentary prize at the Sundance Film Festival. It won the Filmmakers' award at the HotDoc doc festival in Toronto.



    This is another film by Revolver entertainment and it is successful as GASHE.com gave the film a rating of 2 1/2 stars saying, "While the plot is dark and uncomfortable at times, it moves along at a decent pace and the unique use of different lead actors for each story works.




    1. Choose one film distributed by Revolver Entertainment and explain how it compares to Ill Manors (similarities and differences). The movie 'Sket' by revolver entertainment is some what similar to ill manors as they share the same urban genre and they have similar events that take place in the films, and they both involve gangs and crime. However the budget for ill manors (£100,000) is much less than sket (1 million). 
    2. Why did Revolver Entertainment go out of business in 2013? According to senior staff formerly at Revolver, there are also other company-specific financial reasons for the company’s demise, not just the general DVD downturn. One internal email between executives from late last year seen by Screen describes the company’s “cash flow problems” and income being “significantly below that forecast.”
    3. How is new technology changing the way films are being distributed? New technology is changing the way films are distributed as in this day and age, films are easily downloaded over the internet due to piracy and there has been a decrease of people who go to theatres and cinema, as people would rather sit at home and watch movies on their laptops for free rather than going to enjoy them on the big screen.  
    Gunslinger

    1. Visit the Gunslinger website and list the three films currently in development (click on theSlate tab). 
    2. Research the Gunslinger/Revolver film Shank. Embed the trailer in your blog and explain how it compares to Ill Manors (similarities and differences). 


    The film shank is similar to ill manors as they both have urban genres and they both have similar film budgets. The films are both about gangs, crime and violence. 

    Certification
    One final aspect of institution is the certificate the film was awarded for exhibition. This is decided by the British Board of Film Classification.
    1. How does the certification process work at the BBFC?
    The certification process works when the BBFC reviews the film and decides what certifcate should be given to the film.The BBFC have a criteria that film should follow for it to be a certain age certificate.
    1. Think about the certificate of Ill Manors (18 certificate). What is deemed acceptable for an 18 certificate? What is the difference between a 15 certificate and an 18 certificate?
    15 certificate -
     - allows moderate violence
    - moderate sexual activities
    - Drug taking not banned but should not be promoted.

    18 Certificate -
    - Allow violence
    - Allow sexual activity
    - Drug taking allowed but not to be promoted

    The major difference is the explicitly of violence/Sexual activities. 
    1. What are the advantages and disadvantages for a film in being given an 18 certificate?
    Theres not many advantages but they could be -
    - 18 and over can be reformers in which they could be aware of explicit social awareness which they can help youngsters under the age of 18


    Radio 1

    1) How popular is BBC Radio 1? Find average listening figures for the station. How has the BBC Radio 1 audience declined over recent years? Why might this have happened?

    BBC Radio 1 is a British radio station operated by the British Broadcasting Corporation which also broadcasts internationally, specialising in modern and current popular music and chart hits throughout the day. Radio 1 provides alternative genres after 7:00 pm, including electronic dance, hip hop, rock, indie or interviews.  It's estimated that Radio 1 has an estimate of 10.26 million listeners and it can also be digitally distributed in many other countries. 

    2) Who is the target audience for BBC Radio 1?

    It is aimed primarily at the 15–29 age group, although the average age of the UK audience in 2008 was 33. 

    3) How does Plan B promote Ill Manors in this interview?

    Plan B promotes 'Ill Manors as a film which shows what happens with the youth growing up in East London. He also stated that if this film was successful he would go on to produce more films. He describes his role in 'Ill Manors' in terms of the production process and this helps to enhance his star image. Plan B plays many parts in terms of the production such as directing, filming and editing. His involvement with the film is likely to attract many of his fans.

    4) What representation of Plan B can we find in this interview?
    Plan B describes how he's been sleeping off a sofa in his studio because of the fact that he is putting in hard effort and time to edit 'Ill Manors'. Also, Plan B is described to have changed his look in terms of appearance and occupation (experiencing more with film than music at this point).

    1. How does the Ill Manors official website promote the film? The website gives a visual representation of what the film is all about, as the whole website has this wrecked look, and is dark which portrays what the characters are like, this is what would attract the audience, the website follows through this look wherever you click, so the atmosphere is the same. They promote the film by having the trailer to view, stills, videos and reactions and reviews of what viewers think of the movie.
    2. What examples can you find of the Ill Manors brand on the website homepage? The title 'ill manors' on the website is the same as it is shown in the film, posters etc. This is very large on the top left of the screen and this is how the brand is shown on the website. 
    3. What links does the website offer? The website offers links to view the trailer, which is essential as audience would want to view this. They also have links to  the synopsis which explains the background behind the storyline. They also have a link to the director 'Ben drew' which has some background information about him and how he feels about his first directed movie. There are also stills of the film and characters. There is a link to the Album which has the full soundtrack of the movie. There is also a link to videos showing behind the scenes footage so the audience gets an insight to the background. There is a 'buy now' link where you can purchase the dvd or blueray. The final link is to the reactions and reviews of the film.
    4. What examples of synergy can you find between the website homepage and the print/broadcast platforms? The font of the title is the same on the website and posters/DVD packaging, a bold and basic font to uplift the fact the film is low-budget and urban, the title is in white to connote an element of seriousness which reflects the depth of the problems the actors have to face in the film. In addition, the same actors are used especially Riz Ahmed who heavily devises the plot and to make the audience aware and to remind them that he is the prominent figure in the film.

    The Tag London campaign helps target the right audience for the film as it shows the opinions projected in iconic places in London which will surely attract the attention of the right target audience as it is shocking to see graffiti on these iconic places.

    Similarly to Facebook, all activities with relevance to Ill Manors was posted on the page but in addition to this, fans reactions and opinions are held with greater importance on the twitter page in comparison to the facebook page.

    YouTube - planbuk channel
    planbuk uploads many relevant clips to promote Ill Manors, especially by uploading behind the scenes footage which would not be shown in the cinema.

    During the TEDx talk, Plan B displayed his music video from his you tube channel. Both the TEDX talk and the music video promotes the film as it shows how young people can go off the rails if they arent helped by people in the position to help them.



    Ill manors E-media: Tag London campaign

    • Summarise the Ill Manors Tag London campaign in 100 of your own words.
    The campaign is a designed to gather social media technology and started off by tweet-to-unlock release, Fans were made to tweet the hashtag to receive is a link to a SoundCloud set that hosted tracks from the album before it was fully released. The #illmanorsalbum hashtag also led to an increase in mentions for Plan B's official accountFans were prompted to tweet a newly created @TagLondon account with the hashtag #ILLMANORS and say how they feel about the current state of Britain. The campaign had over 5,000 entries in the space of five days and nearly 300 selected tweets were tagged by graffiti artists and then projected around iconic London sites. The peak of the #ILLMANORS hashtag was on release day, with over 1.3k tweets on that day compared to the previous week’s daily average of 220 tweets per day. The locations and images of these messages were then broadcast via the micro-site.

    Print platform: Branding


    1)What are the key conventions that help you identify the print text (e.g. title, central image, review quotes etc.)?
    The key conventions in this poster advert of ill manors is the central image which is large and shows one of the main protagonists along with a view of buildings and trees which are used to compose the title 'ill manors' as the 'ill' is perhaps shown as building and the 'manors' is shown on the road, which looks similar to a zebra crossing. All these things help you identify the print text which is a poster of the film.

    2)What design features help identify the Ill Manors brand?
      The colour scheme in this poster is yellow, black and has parts of grey shown and this has a contrast of bright and dull, which could identify positives and negatives in the film. The font of the title is in large block capitals which makes it bold and stand out from the poster, the two colours used for the title are white and yellow which are two bright colours and this makes them stand out from the rest of the poster. The overall design of the poster looks good. 

    3)What examples of synergy can you find with the broadcast platform or other print examples?
    The poster looks as if it has been photographed in the suburban areas of London and Plan B decided to film in East London where he originally grew up to show the experiences he faced when growing up. Also, he wanted to create a low-budget film to help promote the grim reality the youth live up to in the suburban areas of London.

What are the key conventions that help you identify the print text (e.g. title, central image, review quotes etc.)The key conventions in this poster advert of ill manors is the central image which is of many of the main characters in a line leaning forward and shows one the main protagonist walking in the middle and he looks larger than the other characters,so he seems more superior than them.
    2. What design features help identify the Ill Manors brand? The colour scheme of this poster is red, white and black, and text is all white which makes it stand out from the rest of the blog. This has a contrast of bright and dull, which could identify positives and negatives in the film. The font of the title is in large block capitals which makes it bold and stand out from the poster.

    1. What are the key conventions that help you identify the print text (e.g. title, central image, review quotes etc.)? The key conventions to help identify that this is the DVD cover are the review quotes, which show how many stars the film deserves from different newspaper and one or two words they would use to describe the movie e.g 'utterly gripping'.
    2. What design features help identify the Ill Manors brand? The font design helps identify the Ill Manors brand. The main character at the front helps the audience to recognize the film. The gun at the front portrays violence besides crime which fits into Ill Manors brand and helps people to identify it. Also underneath the title "Ill Manors" it states that it is a "Ben Drew Film" indicating the Ill Manors brand. Another thing is the design of the image in the background of the estate buildings hurdling in gives the idea of the Ill Manors theme of estates being intimidating.
    3. What examples of synergy can you find with the broadcast platform or other print examples? There is synergy between other print platforms such as the DVD cover and the music packaging which show the same title in the way it it shown here.
